“Tales of Travel and Transformation” tell the stories of travel, and how people’s lives are often transformed from experiences of travel.
IDEAS - ENCORE Conversations (3 pm)
Back in March of 2019, Sofia Syed, the owner of Roasted Tremont, spent time in Copan Ruinas, Honduras on the coffee farm ran by Katia Duke. The trip was hosted by Alejandra Flores of Unateza Coffee, and the accompanying members all had a background working in coffee. While Sofia was there, she worked closely with Katia. During her trip, she learned about the life cycle and process of coffee first-hand. All of which allowed her to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation. Now that Sofia has opened Roasted, she is able to support Katia by using her blends, and can share Katia's transcendent coffee with Tremont! Join us as Sofia discusses her journey, and how it transformed her life by moving from LA to Cleveland!
MUSIC - Sunday Discovery Series (4 pm)
PROGRAM:
Andrew Rindfleisch: Quiet Music
Osvaldo Golijov (b. 1960): Tenebrae
Franz Schubert (1797-1828): Piano Trio No.2 in Eb, D.929
*intermission*
Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence
This program features Andrew Rindfleisch’s Quiet Music, a piece in which the usual deep, resonant sound of the cello is transformed literally through the use of the instruments’ natural harmonics and a practice mute. Tchaikovsky and Golijov, on the other hand, were transformed quite figuratively by their travels, and tell us so in their compositions. Tchaikovsky famously frequented Italy, where he wrote some of his best works telling the tales of the people and places he experienced. Golijov was transformed by contrasting experiences in a war torn Israel and a planetarium in NYC. His haunting work, Tenebrae encourages its audience to listen from different perspectives, and notice how a beautiful melody can hold pain beneath.
